So here it is...the last blog for December and so the very last blog of 2011! Hope everyone’s enjoyed ready our posts for the last twelve months and here’s to another twelve! If there’s a specific topic or product that you’d like to see featured in 2012, please let us know!

Now without further festive ado, as promised – here’s an update on our office Secret Santa! I was honoured with a lovely canvas example of Pat Butcher in all her glory. This has now been displayed in pride of place (on the wall behind my desk!) In other office-related present news, we had Ice Age dvds, impossipuzzles, mugs, snoods and rocket-making kits (to name a few!) All presents seemed surprisingly suited to their new owners and everyone was very content as they tucked into their home-made mince pies (thank you Mrs Gilliard!)

We hope everyone had a great Christmas and are looking forward to a lovely celebration for New Years Eve tomorrow, to give 2012 a warm welcome – we look forward to working with you next year!

While we’re always saddened to hear of the bankruptcy of a long-standing brand, the news that plans to save Saab have been quashed by GM struck one particular nerve. In office news - although we were all disappointed about the departure of our tech team’s Robert, we’re pleased he’s going back home to Poland to spend the first of many Christmases with his newly- extended family (Robert’s first child, Szymon (Simon) was born a few weeks ago). Lots of luck! In the office we’ve been gearing up for Christmas with not one – but TWO ‘beautifully’ decorated trees and even managed to convince all the guys to join in the festivities in the form of the office Secret Santa (now we await their lovingly purchased gifts with baited breath!). We’re swapping presents on Wednesday so I’ll let you know how it went!

How was everyone’s Bonfire night? There are a few colleagues in the office who appear to have 'inadvertently' taken up the challenge of Movember, to show their support for raising awareness for prostate cancer in the UK. Some of us were also lucky enough to see Sir Jimmy Savile in Leeds before the packed funeral yesterday, which ended with him being laid to rest by the sea in Scarborough. Three cheers for a Yorkshire legend, hopefully the foundations set up in his memory will continue to help people long into the future.

Jimmy volunteered at the LGI as a porter and to continue along the medical vein we’d like to remind you that we’re attending the Emergency Service Show (ESS) this month! Your Questions Vs Our Technical Team

Our technical department are often called upon to fix generic or more common problems - that it may have been possible for the customer to rectify or to fix offsite.

For additional convenience for our customers we’re developing a select number of ‘How to’ guides and blog posts to help steer you through.

One of our technical experts, Michael Corbett was only too happy to help when we told him the plans for our latest idea.

Here’s how he would help you with the above issues:

‘How can we restore an LXE MX7 to default?’

To restore an LXE MX7 to default is a very simple procedure.

· From the Windows desktop click the Start Menu.

· Within the Start menu click run.

· Within the resulting menu box type coldboot (all one word) and press ok

This will cause the device to reboot and when it has completed loading all settings will be restored to their default state.

And ‘How can we add a carriage return after scanning a barcode?’

To add a carriage return to an LXE MX7 (This will also work for the majority of LXE devices).

· From the device windows desktop click the Start menu.

· Click Settings and then Control Panel. This will load a separate page.

· Within Control Panel, scroll to find the Data tab and double click the icon.

· Within the scanner control pane that has just opened, click the Barcode tab.

· In the barcode tab click the Symbology Settings button.

· At the bottom of this screen there will be an “Add” field. In here tick the Siffix box and type ^M (This must be a capital M).

· Click ok to save these changes.

You can now test scan a barcode to ensure that this setting has been applied.

As summer hots up, YDMT are full of activity harvesting ripe wildflower seed from species-rich hay meadows in the Yorkshire Dales, which will be spread onto specially prepared 'receptor meadows' in need of improvement. By the end of the summer, YDMT will have added seed to an impressive 200 hectares of upland hay meadow across the Dales and surrounding area, as well as significantly improving their management. This is ultimately great news for insects and other wildlife, as seed addition and traditional management help the lucky meadows chosen to receive YDMT’s tlc to become more botanically diverse over time.

Continuing along the charitable route, YDMT also invite everyone to visit the Flowers of the Dales festival. With the tiny glimpse of summer now seemingly halted, here at Renovotec HQ we’re looking forward to exhibitions and new products galore. Today marks the start of our two day attendance at the Logistics Link Live exhibition at the NEC in Birmingham. We’re at stand 166 in Hall 3, if you’d like to come and have a chat. We were first introduced to the feel and usability of the Psion EP10 at the Varlink and Psion Ingenuity Roadshow. Partners from across the North were gathered to the plush suites of the Marriott hotel in Manchester on the 25^th May to view the new PDA. We were introduced to the best bits with the opening presentation, then came lunch of a bacon and egg salad...in a glass (a delicacy which more than meets the requirements for the sought-after Renovotec recommendation). Tummies filled, we were then led into a separate exhibition room dedicated to all things EP10.

On Wednesday myself and my colleague were treated to something extra special from our Platinum Partner: Psion. We watched (and listened) to a very informative webinar on the brand new PDA, the EP10. In a nutshell... it’s a little gem. Feedback has suggested that customers are keen to have as large a screen as possible, without compromising on quality – Psion listened and the EP10 boasts a 3.7” screen, the same size as some of the much larger devices.

Speaking of Omnii, the EP10 also runs on the Omnii platform and although isn’t quite as modular, offers attractive accessories and features, that more than compensate. Its sensory advancements are also very impressive. It detects which way the user is holding the device and adapts to either portrait or landscape views. It has built in GPS, a digital compass and a proximity sensor. Renovotec's Barcode Bunny Talks LXE Marathon, Zebra Receipt Printers and Bank Holidays

While most of us have settled happily into the bank holiday weekend (or for those lucky enough to have the 3 days in the middle of the bank holidays off work - 11 days break!), lets spare a thought for those working in emergency services, on checkouts to ensure we have our fill of Easter treats and even to postal couriers rushing to deliver our chocolatey good wishes country-wide!

When I spotted the postman this morning with a spring in his step, delivering our mail and collecting a signature for a tracked item, I thought -- here he is, happily bobbing around scanning the barcodes on our Easter mail what we need is a blog, not about the Easter Bunny but about the 'Barcode Bunny'! Outwardly much the same as the Easter Bunny, but enjoys discussing barcodes and the products needed to scan said barcodes.

Whether you're taking full advantage of the LXE 8500 series in a well-known supermarket near you or having a receipt printed from one of the Zebra receipt printers, it's likely that you'll have taken advantage of the Barcode Bunny at some point during the Spring Bank Holiday. If you're in the barcoding business, you will already be perfectly aware of this.

LXE Marathon Field Computer

What you may not know is that barcodes and barcode scanning equipment is increasingly utlised among the emergency services. The LXE Marathon could literally be a lifesaver as it immediately, allows its medical-professional-user to use the GPS to find the location of the emergency. Temporary details about the patient and their condition can then be stored in the Marathon and printed from a USB-attached mobile printer. Police offices can use the biometric mouse on the LXE Marathon to finger print suspects, to allow the Gobi WWAN radio to check these prints against the internal database of criminals and missing persons. Add to these features of 2MP camera and its rugged IP65 rated design and you're really backing a winner.

Psion have only gone and done it again... with the EP10

The Psion EP10 is the latest low cost PDA from the Psion think tank. It uses Windows Embedded Handheld 6.5.3 operating system and comes complete with a 3.2 mega pixel colour camera and video capability. Psion promise their new arrival will perform throughout your shift and offer a choice of either a 3.7V @ 2400 mAh or a high capacity 3600 mAh Li-ion rechargeable batteries. Its system back up shouldn’t disappoint either with 5 minutes back up time allowed for changing batteries.

What's more the EP10 isn’t short of enhanced features with the accelerometer, digital compass, gyroscope, light sensor and proximity charger all included.

Innovative PDA: Psion EP10

Available accessories for the Psion EP10 include a handstrap, a quad charger, 4 slot battery chargers, vehicle cradle and a CLA charger. Its ergonomic design allows for straightforward, ambidextrous one-hand operation.

The Psion EP10 comes complete with a 2D imager and the display makes the most of its 3.7” VGA portrait mode, backlight feature 165 cd/m2 output, sunlight readable integrated touch screen that can be either finger or passive stylus operated. The EP10 has an IP rating of 54, offering protection from rain and dust, a drop rating of 1.5m and can be stored at temperatures ranging from -20°C to +65°C.

Psion are confident that the EP10 will improve the reach of their products and appeal to businesses who utilise consumer grade smart phones for commercial and industrial activities in the field.

Last week saw our sales team attend a very successful Avnet Partner day with a Motorola theme. A particular highlight was also the release of LXEs impressive update to their popular MX7: the Tecton. LXE also promise a positive response to their latest vehicle mount computer. The Thor (as featured in our previous blog: As the Weather begins to Thor...below) boasts three industry firsts including a field-replaceable front panel, quick mount smart dock and ignition control.

Today is also the last day of the successful Traffex show at the NEC and the very last day of March. The 5^th of April brings Multimodal, one of the biggest shows in our events calendar is almost upon us, with preparations ‘aplenty’ almost complete it looks set to be a successful few days at the NEC in Birmingham.

The buzz around our field team certainly increased today with the arrival of their long awaited branded fleeces, courtesy of Inkeeping. Special thanks to John and Jane Issacs and to a member of our team for expertly modelling it for us in a sunny, yet decidedly windy Wakefield.

LXE announced the arrival of their new vehicle mount computer (VMC): the Thor today.

The LXE Thor boasts not one, not two but three industry firsts.

The impressive triple consists of:

A Field-replaceable front panel that lets you get back on line if the touch-screen, keyboard or defroster fail.

Quick Mount Smart Dock allows you to remove units from the vehicle at the touch of a finger -- saving you money and reducing down-time.

Ignition control to ensure the computer is ready for work when you are. (LXE)

The LXE Thor

LXE explains, “Thor redefines the expectations of what a VMC [Vehicle Mount Computer] can accomplish with a processing platform that is dramatically faster than any previous CE computer”.

The Thor’s Quick Mount Smart Dock opens up a range of opportunities. If costs need to be limited, rather than buying a Thor for each individual vehicle, as long as all are equipped with a Quick Mount Smart Dock, the computer itself can be interchanged between vehicles as demand alters.

The ignition control feature incorporates clever technology that detects when the ignition is active; whenever it fires up so too does the LXE Thor. This should prove time-saving for workers and ultimately improve productivity. For industrial users the Thor’s optional screen blanking (activated when the vehicle is in motion) helps to keep workers safe, offering additional peace of mind.

Happy International Women's Day! We’re pleased to report that year by year, more and more women are employed in the technology and most relevant to us, the warehousing, RF and barcoding industries. To celebrate, we thought it was only right to mention International Women’s Day in todays post.

Not only does the next 24 hours salute the achievements of remarkable women across the world, it also commemorates how far women have come towards equal rights between the sexes. A challenge it seems that Bond actor, Daniel Craig strongly supports (today he donned a dress, skyscraper heels and a blonde wig to publicise the cause).

Renovotec Win Award for Outstanding Warehouse Sector Performance 2010

The last week or so has been fraught with dilemmas, as we spread ourselves thinly across the various events planned! With Logisitcs Link South 2011 and the Varlink Meet the Manufacturers event planned for the same few days, it was decided that neither could be missed.

Free gifts and advice aplenty were on offer at Varlink, while the leads came flooding in for the boys down at Esher. Varlink also held their award ceremony at the Marriott, where Renovotec's director Richard Gilliard was pleased to accept the award for Outstanding Warehouse Sector Performance 2010.

We're now looking forward to upcoming shows such as Food and Drink Logistics Show next week and Multimodal beginning the 5^th of April 2011.

The Intermec CS40 has Arrived

As I wandered into Renovotec HQ this morning after a hairy 15 minutes, trying desperately to de-ice my windscreen...without leaving the warmth of my heated car seat, I found that the office was already toasty with excitement. A popular courier service had just arrived bearing the coveted gift of an Intermec CS40.

With its already-popular appearance and impressive weight of less than 200g, the Intermec CS40 promises big things. It boasts an IP rating of 54 and a 2.8 in, 240 x 320 pixel (QVGA) trans-reflective TFT-LCD display, shown in 65,536 (16 bit RGB) colours.

Keyboard options for the Intermec CS40 include either the numeric (26 key) or the QWERTY (42 key) keypad. The CS40 also includes 512 MB of Flash storage (with approx 350 MB available for user applications) and 256 MB RAM (approximately 150 MB available for user applications).
